I will always love the Japanese tradition of dressing rocks. In actuality, these are Jiso. In buddhisim they protect children and travelers, which is the same thing to the Japanese. They are supposed to be along major roads but in the past the Japanese govt tried to ban Buddhisim to protect Shinto. Of course in Shinto the emperorr is a god so it was self preservation.
